Another Hectic Week in the Top 25 Leads to a Number of Notable Fallers

As the 2026 college baseball season presses on into the middle of conference play, the top 25 continues to see a lot of movement after a couple of hectic weekends in the power conferences. Only two teams fell from last week’s update, but there were a lot more programs considered as teams that should make it into the top 25 as the gap between 20 and as far as the 40th best team in the nation gets closer and closer. Here is the week 8 update:

In arguably the biggest series of the season, #1 UCLA showed why they have held the top spot all season as they swept #9 USC (formerly #6) in pretty convincing fashion at home. USC only falls three spots due to the fact that they had to go on the road to far and away the best team in the country at the moment, and at least remained competitive for a portion of the series. They also still own arguably the best pitching staff in the nation, so I don’t believe their first series loss of the season given the opponent should punish them to a larger extent.

Across other outlets, both #3 Georgia Tech and #4 Georgia jumped #2 Texas after their impressive series sweeps, but Texas still managed to win their series on the road against South Carolina despite an ugly loss in the opener. On very rare occasions do I believe it’s okay to drop a team after winning a series, but not in this case. Regardless of the fact that South Carolina is one of the lesser teams in the SEC, it’s still tough to go on the road and win a series in that conference. Certainly there’s an argument that Georgia deserves to jump both Texas and Georgia Tech after going on the road and sweeping #8 Mississippi State (formerly #4), but there just wasn’t anything from Texas or Georgia Tech in my opinion that warranted them a drop. Mississippi State does fall four spots opposed to USC’s three spot slide due to the fact they suffered the sweep at home rather than on the road. And just like USC, I still trust the full body of work over the performance in a single weekend which is why neither are falling out of the top ten.

#5 Florida State and #6 North Carolina both moved up within the top ten, but swapped places after Florida State’s weekend held a little more weight. North Carolina won their series at home over #25 Boston College (formerly #23) while Florida State went on the road and won their series over #14 Virginia (formerly #11). Both ACC programs have very similar resumes, but Florida State has a little bit more to show for themselves as they have yet to lose a conference series while North Carolina does have a home series loss to Virginia earlier on in ACC play. Despite an ugly mid-week loss to Washington, #7 Oregon State does climb two spots after a convincing series sweep on the road over a strong mid-major in Lamar.

#10 Alabama was the biggest riser in this week’s update as they climbed from #20 all the way to #10. A jump that high has been rare for these updates, but with the way the list shaped out, it made the most sense. With a series win on the road over #19 Oklahoma (formerly #14) and a series sweep over #20 Florida a few weeks ago, they had to jump both of those teams, and while #11 Auburn jumped up a spot with their series win over #21 Arkansas (formerly #17), Alabama’s recent series sweep over Auburn warranted them a spot over Auburn as Alabama executed on the chance to prove their success has been real after debuting on the top 25 last week.

#12 Coastal Carolina has jumped into the top mid-major spot for the first time this year, coming in right in front of #13 Southern Miss who has remained at #13 for three weeks now. A 2-2 week can typically earn you a bump up if your two wins came in a series win over the weekend, which it did for Southern Miss, but it’s also tough to warrant those types bumps to mid-majors so that’s why they stayed at #13. As for Coastal, they came through with a 3-1 weekend, taking down South Alabama in two of three at home while also beating The Citadel on the road in their mid-week. Coastal also owns an 11-1 record in the Sun Belt compared to Southern Miss’s 7-5 record, so Coastal deserves the nod over Southern Miss at the moment.

#15 Oregon suffered what is tied for the biggest drop within the top 25 with #19 Oklahoma and #20 Florida as each fell five spots. Oregon went on the road to un-ranked Michigan where they lost the series, but it wouldn’t have been as glaring a loss had Oregon also not been shut out at home by Portland in their mid-week. Oklahoma and Florida move down together as they remain right next to each other after each lost their weekend series at home.

#16 Texas A&M and #17 Nebraska continue their ascent within the top 25 as Texas A&M took home a series win over Vanderbilt while Nebraska swept their week which included a series sweep over Penn State. #18 West Virginia does stay put at #18 despite losing their weekend to now ranked #23 Central Florida, but going 2-2 on the week. A weekend series loss typically will warrant a drop of a few spots, but in this case, there was nobody else behind West Virginia with enough of a convincing week to be placed ahead of West Virginia.

Rounding out the top 25, #22 NC State holds on to their standing as a top 25 with a series sweep over what looked like a surging Notre Dame team after nearly falling out of the top 25 a week ago. #25 Boston College barely holds on to their top 25 ranking after losing their series on the road at North Carolina, so they’re given another shot to prove it this week in the same manner NC State was a week ago. #24 Ole Miss continues to fall off the list and find their way back on, this time making their way back on with a series win on the road at Florida. For #23 Central Florida, it is their season debut on the top 25 with their series win at home over West Virginia. Ole Miss and Central Florida took the spots of Tennessee and Kentucky after Tennessee lost their weekend series at home to LSU while Kentucky also fell at home to Missouri. Some notable bubble teams that received a lot of consideration in this update were Wake Forest, Jacksonville State, and Arizona State among a number of other teams that remain in the bubble.
