Arguably the toolsiest player in the Yankees system, George Lombard Jr brings high-level athleticism paired with polish on both sides of the ball to the diamond. The production for George starts with the glove at shortstop, but it doesn’t end there. He has flashed above-average power at the plate and has made enough contact for it to count thus far into his professional career. Getting to it on a consistent basis will be the difference between him being a glove-first shortstop or a legit muti-tool player at the big league level. With very healthy swing decisions, highlighted by his 15% walk rate between High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset in 2025, there is a solid floor of offensive production from Lombard Jr. There are some holes in the hit tool, specifically on velocity at the top of the zone, but he has made necessary adjustments during each of his level jumps through the minors. On the field, it’s comfortably plus defense due to his excellent ability to cover a lot of ground at shortstop and back it up with a strong arm. His ability to slide over to second or third base and play above-average defense works in his favor as well and should be able to guarantee him plenty of playing time at the big league level as long as the bat holds up. The athleticism shows up on the bases too as he has stolen over 30 bases in each of his two full pro seasons. Lombard Jr won’t turn 21 until mid-way through the 2026 season, giving him plenty of runway to develop into a legitimate piece for the Yankees.
